GAS PURGING EQUIPMENT

Protection gas welding means the use of gas to protect a welded seam, usually the welded underside or root, in order to prevent oxidation which develops through contact with oxygen when the material is heated to welding temperature. In order to guarantee protection the residual oxygen in the welding area must be reduced to under 50 PPM (0.005%).

This is particularly the case with protection gas welding (any process) of not only austenitic but also ferritic steels and non ferrous metals such as titanium. The gas protection on the underside to the welding not only prevents oxidation but also assists with the shaping of the seam (e.g. a smooth surface with notch free flange fusion), thus producing a quality welded seam.
